Before becoming involved in business ventures, Bill Harmatz enjoyed a successful career as a horse jockey. With 1,770 recorded wins in 17 years of professional race riding, he secured the position of one of America's leading reinsmen. Between the start of his career at Caliente in 1953 and almost two decades later when he hung up his tack in 1971, Harmatz won twelve $100,000.00 events. Among his achievements are receiving the Guild Meritorious Award and the George Woolf Sportsmanship Award, co-founding the Jockey's Association, and once riding to six victories in a single day. Winning the Preakness in 1959 aboard Royal Orbit stands out as a highlight in his career as well as in the history of the sport.
Today Bill Harmatz remains heavily
involved in the community. A member of the Vista Village board, the Community
Development Association, and a principal supporter of Girls Inc., he is a highly
visible citizen. Harmatz's Vista Entertainment Center and Melrose Law Center
continue to be integral components of the city.
